Brothers and Sisters!
In the verses of the Quran the Almighty declares: “Ohh those who have faith! Never disobey Allah and everyone should let everyone see what is install for them tomorrow. Never disobey Allah. There’s no doubt Allah is aware of all youır doings.”[i]
Brothers and Sisters!
It was a Friday. A man walked into the mosque and cut short his sermon and asked “Ohh the envoy of the Almighty, when will the Day of Judgment come?” The companions of the Prophet gestured him to be silent but the man went on talking and asked the same question three times. After leading the Friday prayers the Prophet turned to the congregation and asked “Where is the person who asked me when the Day of Judgment will come?” The man identified himself. The Prophet asked him “so what have you prepared for the Day of Judgment?” The man replied “I do not have that much achievements. Yet I love Allah and the Envoy of the Almighty.” The person is with whom he or she loves. Then you will be with the ones you love.[ii]
This hadith (prophetic actions and teachings) stresses that we should always be prepared for that great day, the day when we will be asked to account for what we have done. It is more important that we should be prepared for the Day of Judgment rather than when that day will come. Preparing for the Day of Judgment means to love the Almighty and the Prophet and live a life they way Allah and the prophet desire.
Our Lord the Almighty has told us in the Quran that we have not been created without a reason, we are not left on our own and that we will be reborn to a brand new life after death. We are always reminded that life in the world is something that can mislead us. It says claims that life in this world is all we will get only leads to denial. It stresses that a world without the Day of Judgment is a place where you just play, enjoy yourselves, show off and brag.
Brothers and sisters!
Life in this world is a passing phase it is a stop on the way to eternity. We will win the right for eternal life in this world. While the world is a testing place for us the phases of the Day of Judgment and eventually heaven and hell are the places where justice will be served. On that day we will be rewarded for all the good things we have done and we will be punished for all our bad deeds. No one will suffer even a tiny bit of injustice.
A person who lives with this notion will always test him or herself to be able to give an account of their deeds. They will try to keep away from evil and wrongdoing thinking of the day when they will be held to account by the Almighty. They will always try to lead a life of benevolence, goodness and to appease the Almighty. A community where these notions hold strong roots will be a peaceful, tranquil and safe community.
Brothers and sisters,
At the end those who have done good deeds will be rewarded in the Day of Judgment. Those who see that their goodness has not be enough will be sorry. Do not forget that heaven is a garden whose seeds you sow in this world. Hell is the fire we carry with us to the other world.
Let me end the Khutbah with this prayer:
“Dear Allah provide us with goodness in this world, provide us goodness on the Day of Judgment and spare us from the torment of hell!”[iii]
“Dear Allah help me live a good life after death. Let me do more and more good in life. Let death be a way of ridding me from all evil!”[iv]
