January’s Special Open Lecture “Toshihiko Izutsu and〈Word of Transcendence〉”
January’s Special Open Lecture “Toshihiko Izutsu and <Word of Transcendence>”
We will consider why Toshihiko Izutsu was interested in Arabic among the many languages and why he was particularly interested in “Islam” among the many religions and cultures. From his youth to his later years, Izutsu’s writings contain many descriptions of words that descend vertically from above. For example, Izutsu understands the Qur’an as a vertical manifestation of the “Word”. Therefore, I would like to examine what kind of phenomenon Izutsu understands as a vertical manifestation of language.
